One of the best camp grounds I have been to. Close to a few small rural towns to get local produce to cook. Hiking, fishing, sites are very well maintained. Only small down side would be the vault toilets need to be cleaned up and it would be great if they had a ranger that walked around at night as a few sites did not maintain good camping noise courtesy late at night.
Nice park, good trails, beach, lots of boating and kayaking, campsites look pretty private. I have been to 15-20 Wisconsin State Park and this seems like the most forgotten and neglected I have seen. Staff in the park office were friendly. They do not sell park patches (my son collects them from each state park we go to). There is one building of flush toilets and the rest are pit toilets that are very old. Also, the pit toilets at the beach were very very full. Sand at beach is full of clay or some kind of sediment. Makes it fun to build in the sand, but wash your suits after your visit. Lake is quiet, no houses on the lake that I could see. Definitely worth a visit.
Very nice place but don't get site #96 or the ones immediately arounding it until they've done some work. Just finished my first trip tent camping here, first weekend of October. Friends & I arrived separately late Friday night amid a cold thunderstorm (only chance we had to camp together, had to take it even though we knew the weather was going to suck). We got our tents up but my car ended up stuck. The site itself was strangely laid out: parking for 2 cars (not 3 as we thought, even though 3 fit easily) right along the higher road, with a short kinda narrow staircase of cut rail ties down a muddy slope, to the wider site itself (if viewed from above, looks like an hourglass). The site continued to be quite sloped and uneven, only the back-most portion was actually flat and that was the lowest point, and so packed it was difficult to place tent stakes, also a fair amount of that space was occupied by the fire pit, which was actually set too deep in the ground, couldn't feel any heat unless you were the 1person trying to tend the flames, which was also difficult given the angle of approach. Ranger on rounds told us about a guest parking lot and when I said I couldn't get traction on the wet grass at that slope, a bunch of other campers came to help push my car up the hill and back on to the road! Thanks again everybody! PLENTY of other sites looked IDEAL/Perfect for both tents & RVs.Overall site #96 was OK and we didn't have any further issues with it, in fact the large tree in the middle was perfect for tethering the dogs where they could still interact with everyone. Main bathroom facility was large & well lit, closed from 12:45-2pm daily for cleaning, but the showers had hot water (around midnight on Saturday anyway, thank goodness) and were very spacious w/hooks and a bench well away from the wet stall itself. Lots of friendly dogs on leashes, and of course booze allowed on site. Large bundles of firewood $5, numerous short (1-3 mile) trails to hike. Didn't touch the water, too cold in October and we had no water craft/gear, though the Lake looked lovely. I think there may be a firing range nearby because there were frequent gunshots in the distance, too often and varied to be people hunting, which got annoying a few times. I'm under the impression it's open year-round (including tents) which presents some interesting opportunities. Didn't speak to much staff other than the Registration lady and that one Ranger. Would definitely camp again!
This is one of those state parks that is a hidden treasure. Great hiking trails, beautiful lake and no mosquitoes. You'll know why when you see the bat houses!
Catfish on liver. Large mouth & smallies. Many to big to keep. Northern water snakes.
